More than two decades of dedication to the built environment have shaped a career defined by purpose, scholarship, and a genuine investment in the people she trains and works alongside.
Dr. Miriam Chukwuma-Uchegbu grew up in Ihitte Uboma, Imo State, and was already distinguishing herself academically long before she entered the world of architecture, earning best student recognition three consecutive years at Federal Government Girls' College, Bauchi between 1983 and 1986.
She went on to study Architecture at Abia State University, completing both her BSc (1993) and her MSc with Distinction (1996) there. After years in active professional practice in Lagos with firms including Adeniyi Coker Architects Limited and CADVantage Limited, she transitioned to architectural education in 2002, joining the Architecture Department at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri.
In 2016, she completed her PhD in Architecture at Imo State University, Owerri, supported by an Education Trust Fund (ETF) scholarship. Since 2019, she has been a faculty member at the Department of Architecture, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), where she continues to teach, research, and mentor the next generation of architects. She also served as Adjunct Lecturer at Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, between 2024 and 2025.
Alongside her academic work, she runs CADflair Consult Ltd, her architectural consultancy practice, maintaining a live connection between theory and the realities of professional building design.
"I plan to mentor junior faculty members and graduate students, sharing my expertise to help them achieve their academic goals."
From academic excellence in secondary school through professional practice and into decades of shaping architectural education.

Investigating how and why residents of low-income housing estates in Nigeria modify their homes after moving in, and what this reveals about gaps in housing policy and design.
Examining the design, delivery, and long-term adaptation of public housing in Nigeria, with attention to affordability, environmental performance, and social inclusion.
Exploring passive cooling strategies for buildings in Nigeria's hot-humid tropical climate, with a focus on reducing mechanical cooling dependence.
Researching quality of teaching in architecture schools, studio environments, virtual education, and the professional development of graduate architects in Nigeria.
Reviewing the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) into Sub-Saharan African retrofit and construction projects, exploring barriers and strategies for adoption.
Appraising barriers faced by women in construction trades and academic careers in architecture, with a focus on achieving sustainable development goals around gender equity.
Teaching has always been more than a profession for Dr. Miriam. Since she joined the architecture faculty at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede in 2002, and later at FUTO from 2019, she has been consistently present not just in the lecture hall but in the design studio, the jury room, and beyond.
Her teaching spans architectural design at all levels, history of architecture, site planning, interior design, technical report writing, and contemporary architecture, among others. She has supervised and mentored students from 2019 at FUTO, guided over 50 students at the B.Tech level, and mentored 500 students at the National Diploma level across the course of her career.
